It’s a Miracle!

Last night at bedtime, Lauren said, “Momma, a miracle happened today.”

“Really? What was the miracle?”

“I thought Safa (another neighborhood friend) was the best friend in the world, but today I met Hannah, and she’s even better! She’s just like me! That’s true a miracle!”

Hannah, the new friend I wrote about yesterday, is also an only child. Her parents are divorced and she spends three weekends a month and every Thursday with her dad and his girlfriend, who are our neighbors. Lauren doesn’t have many friends at her school whose parents are divorced. Hannah is 8, and she takes karate like Lauren does and loves dogs like Lauren does.

She was so exuberant last night, and I have great hopes that this friendship will thrive, that Hannah will be around for a while. I can already tell that if it doesn’t work out, she will be heartbroken. And that breaks my heart just to think about it.

But at least you can give the lesson on how we need to cherish friends when they are in our lives and to look forward to the next one to enter.
